@drforbeez: Apparently the important people from a variety of corporations assembled and invited a GP veterinarian to “collaborate” with them. This meeting resulted in a social media post espousing the value of these entities in veterinary medicine. Never in the history of ever has private equity, corporations, or venture capital been about improving human or animal existence. Just look at human medicine. #chewy #vetmed #veterinarymedicine #veterinary #pettok
if my vet didn’t make things so expensive i wouldn’t buy stuff on chewy for far cheaper 🤷♀️

I had to use Chewy recently as my vet ran out of prednisolone and did not know when they would get more. Chewy had it in stock. I mean…no choice there.

NO! That is NOT Solid Snake! :
I mean, I'm not gonna pay $40 for a bag of LRS at my DVM when Chewy charges $10. the in-office markup is insane.

Chewy makes high quality diet and medications accessible for a large market who wouldn’t do it for their pets otherwise. If I can convince a family to feed a life saving kidney diet because chewy offers it for -10% so be it. - ER LVT

We will not work with Chewy at my private practice either. We also tell people that saving $1-2 at Chewy, you are asking us to work for free to approve the med, write the script etc as well as losing that $1-2… that means exam costs must go up across the board to cover that loss… so Chewy is actually costing them more money long term… and Chewy isn’t supporting the local events like little league, school picnics, the town fair etc… we are!

I was a member of modern animal when it first rolled to Dallas... needless to say I had to send a message recently noting the decline in care since the acquisition

I think everyone is missing the big picture. Their cheap prices are not going to last. They are creating trust in their brand before they become the world’s largest corporation. There’s no corporation on earth that is going to give you affordable anything.

Listen we all love our pets and do our best for them. That said vet care has become outrageously expensive and vet prescriptions are simply unaffordable. I buy all of my prescriptions and prescription food from Chewy because it’s so much cheaper and I get it delivered free within 3 days.

Understood from a providers perspective, but from a customer perspective, how would this be tackled? It feels like the Amazon trap. Everyone wants to support local until the dinner plate at your town boutique is $50 and $7.50 on Amazon. That can be the difference between being able to afford the plate and not afford the plate.

this is partially why the clinic i work at doesn’t send prescriptions out; it has to be purchased from us, or they can go to another clinic/hospital for a prescription. we need to make money somehow.

my vet said that she doesn't recommend ordering medication on chewy because you can't verify how they store it (temp, humidity, etc) much like Amazon. So instead I just buy from them. I like Chewy because when I ordered the wrong size Kongs on accident they refunded me and let me donate the Kongs. I had purchased 5 large kongs (when I meant to order XL). I think it's important to view Chewy as the Amazon for pets and not a company that is specifically looking out for pet parents.

I'm sorry but if I can get the exact same products cheaper then I'm going to go with them and they deliver so I don't have to drive anywhere

My dog had to take Proin for pretty much her whole life. Our vet decided one day to start prescribing smaller bottles with less pills but charge more for them. Chewy had the larger bottles for less. So we switched to getting it from Chewy. It’s going to be hard to convince pet owners to not use chewy when the prices for meds and food at the vet office is often times way more expensive. People cant afford it and chewy makes it affordable.

I’ve had nothing but great experiences with Chewy as a pet owner. If my vet wouldn’t give me a written script for my dog’s prescription food, I would 100% go elsewhere. I’m not buying the food from them when it’s cheaper literally everywhere else. Chewy will send it to my door.

Unfortunately the price difference for the medication is so insane that I have to use chewy. Same medication (same dose & amount) costs $42 at my vets office, $3 at chewy.

our clinic price matches with chewy so the funds still stay within the clinic. we’re a high traffic private practice that now operates on a larger scale now that we’re in a new building. highly recommend price matching instead of working with chewy, costs way less on the clinic end and saves the client that same amount

Where should we buy things from then? Amazon? I don’t think they are any better

My vet wants $70 for flea meds, Chewy is $55. My vet just charged my neighbor $10, 000 for a surgery. My concern is, can I even afford to have three pets?

Oh we’re talking about chewy?! I got things to say… let’s talk about how the wet food from chewy is not being stored properly in their warehouses, let’s talk about their pharmacy.

This is called competition. It isn’t predatory to give people choices that bring prices down. This is great for consumers.

I worry they'll pull an Amazon now that they're opening clinics.. like intentionally undercut the vets until they have enough of a monopoly on the market.

And yet the clients get angry that prices are high and then turn around and give their money to Chewy who is playing a part in those price increases 😑

You are not wrong. With the fact that chewy now is opening up Veterinary clinic they are doing to the Veterinary industry what Walgreens did to the pharmacy in industry. Which means eventually we will have to unionize just so that we can eat lunch.
