Sometimes a dependency doesn’t feel like a prison. It feels like salvation. Like the only thing standing between you and whatever is waiting in the silence. Maybe that’s why people cling to certain things so tightly. A person. Alcohol. Music. Memories. Their phone screen. Sleepless nights. Anything that keeps their mind occupied long enough to survive another day. Because when you’re hurting, you don’t always search for healing. Sometimes you search for relief. And relief is easier to find. It asks less of you. It works faster. For a little while, it makes the world quieter. The problem is that dependencies are masters of disguise. They arrive looking like comfort. Like support. Like something harmless. You tell yourself it’s temporary. Just until things get better. Just until the pain fades. Just until you can breathe normally again. But one day you realize you’re no longer choosing it. You’re relying on it. And that’s when comfort quietly becomes a cage. The strange thing is that dependencies often begin as survival. You weren’t trying to destroy yourself. You were trying to save yourself. Trying to fill an emptiness. Trying to distract yourself from thoughts that never stop talking. Trying to feel something. Or trying not to feel anything at all. And for a while, it works. That’s what makes it so difficult to let go. Because how do you abandon the thing that carried you through your worst days? How do you walk away from something that felt like the only reason you made it through the night? Maybe that’s why people stay attached to things that hurt them. Because they remember the comfort before they remember the damage. They remember being rescued before they remember being trapped. But eventually a painful realization appears. A dependency can keep you alive. It cannot teach you how to live. It can numb the loneliness. It cannot replace connection. It can distract you from pain. It cannot heal it. It can become a shelter during a storm. But shelters are not meant to become homes. And perhaps that is the hardest truth of all. Sometimes the thing that saved you at one point in your life is the very thing preventing you from moving forward now. Not because it was evil. Not because it never helped. But because survival and healing are not the same thing. One helps you endure. The other helps you grow. And there comes a moment when you have to decide whether you want to keep escaping the pain or begin facing it. Because no matter how comforting the dependency becomes, no matter how familiar it feels, it will never be able to give you what you’re truly searching for. Peace. It can imitate peace. Borrow it. Blur reality enough to resemble it. But real peace begins when you no longer need something else to rescue you from yourself. When the thing you’ve been using as a lifeboat finally drifts away, and somehow, for the first time, you discover that you’ve learned how to swim.
