firefighter here. Contact your local fire department let them know that you are a student there and the school has made it known that they will not help you in case of a fire ask if the chief would mind coming and meeting with you to talk about plans to help get you out in case of a fire and locating you he can either help you find a safe place to wait until they can get you in case of a fire or (like I would be) he might be pissed enough to have a talk with the school and maybe even someone higher (chiefs always have weird connections) but it’s at least worth a call

Honestly if a person in a wheelchair is in a life threatening situation like a fire in a building I’m in, then brace yourself to be yanked out of the chair and carried out by whoever I can convince to help me, we used to be a “no man left behind” society and I hate that we’ve slowly forgotten that.

Working at schools as a photographer has made me realized how inaccessible these schools actually are. I carry a cart with equipment over 100lbs and I just think of the students and how unfair it is. The paths are difficult steep narrow and not even smooth. Ada rules and regulations are bs they need to be updated

As a fire department dispatcher- please call your non-emergency admin line at your local Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) and ask to have a special hazard message noted on your address and dorm unit number so that ALL emergency responders know that you are a wheelchair user and will need assistance in evacuation in the event of an emergency. It will automatically notify the dispatcher and the responders.

I have a friend in my University classes in a wheelchair aswell, the Professor and others told her they would try and help get her to safety but can‘t Garantie anything. When she told me this i trained until I could Pick her up and carried her through the whole Building. Now we do this once every two weeks just to make sure than in case of anything I can get her out
