@drtrishapasricha: Fans feel amazing in the heat. But here’s a shocker: in temperatures above 90°F, fans don’t actually lower your body temperature. They just trick the thermal sensors on your skin into signaling to your brain that everything‘s fine – while your core keeps overheating. The fixer simple: wet, your skin first. A spray bottle, a damp shirt, a sponge can give your fan something to actually evaporate. It’s the evaporation of water from your skin that will help you cool most—and keep in mind, of course, the humidity of your environment will affect this! Research shows that a fan plus wet skin can reduce heat strain even in temperatures up to 116°F. It also cuts dehydration by about 50%. #heatwave #heatwaves #climatechange #Summer

What? No. Fans help sweat evaporate off your skin, which is a COOLING process.

As soon as you turn it off...you're just as hot as before. I filled a spray bottle with water and kept spraying myself with it.

Sorry but we need to drop the temperature readings in Fahrenheit. The entire world uses Celsius for a damn good reason🥀

A fan doesn’t feel great when it’s too hot. It feels like blow dryer.

Why do we use fans in computers then?? So that we trick the processor's brain into cooling down or what

Evaporative cooling works unless it’s super humid. So yes fans do work if you sweat.

dipping your arms into a bucket of water can cool your core quickly, it doesn't even have to be ice water

My go to is wetting my shirt with water and sitting in front of a fan. The evaporation of the water cools you down pretty fast and the fan makes it quicker. Though it's less effective the higher the humidity.

fans also help. evaporative cooling is still a thing . you're not tricking your brain, you're using the fan as help to dry the sweat down, which when you're wet and drying up, that uses body heat, the water absorbs that heat to evaporate actually making you cooler

You don't have to, but if you add temps in celsius you'll have a much wider reach with your information! Especially helpful since there's a heatwave in Europe right now.

That’s not true. Fans do cool your body off below a certain temp and humidity. However, they may raise the temperature of the room slightly. But the methods you mention are definitely more effective though.

I’m so confused. Headed to go read the article. Fans literally remove heat from your body by pushing it away plus they can speed evaporative cooling

if the surrounding air is cooler than your body temp then the fan will work. if surrounding air is hotter than body temp, fans will not work.

As soon as I heard the part of what the fan does to you, I was about to say, not if you also keep yourself misted with an ice pack on. That's the best heat wave protection trio!

yeah so does this paper address humidity? cuz misting fans don't help all that much if the water on your skin doesn't evaporate. and shockingly, fans do impact whether the water or sweat on your skin evaporates
