Released by Microsoft in 1998, Windows 98 was the operating system that introduced millions of people to the internet. This was the era of dial up internet, CRT monitors, floppy disks, and CDs. It wasn’t the first version of Windows, but it was the first one that felt truly mainstream. You could browse the web with Internet Explorer, play games like RollerCoaster Tycoon or Age of Empires, listen to CDs, and print school assignments, all from one computer. It also introduced features we take for granted today, like USB support and the Windows Update service. Of course, it wasn’t perfect. Programs crashed all the time, the infamous Blue Screen of Death was a regular occurrence, and restarting your computer was practically part of the troubleshooting guide. But despite its flaws, Windows 98 became one of the most iconic operating systems ever made. For an entire generation, it was their first experience with personal computing, and it helped shape the modern PC as we know it today.

Couldn't you use tab to cycle through selecting buttons on the screen, and when this is selected, press enter to toggle the box? Or was that not a thing back then?

this was how I learned to completely navigate a windows computer without a mouse at all 🤣 sure they make it easier but a mouse is completely unnecessary for a lot of windows computers.
