Before you watch Madoka Magica you should watch what it's inspired from. An anime called Revolutionary Girl Utena. a deconstruction of magical girl anime made by a guy who used to work on Sailor moon. OH and before you watch Utena you should study up on the allegory of Platos cave!

This is my problem with recommending neon Genesis evangelion to people… unless they’ve seen some Mecha anime it’s not gonna land the same way. It’s still good, but some of the context is gone.
