@skija__: The Flakpanzer Gepard is a German self-propelled anti-aircraft gun (SPAAG) designed during the Cold War to protect armoured and mechanised units from low-flying aircraft, helicopters, and later cruise missiles and drones. It was developed in the late 1960s and entered service with West Germany in the 1970s as part of NATO’s layered air defence system. At its core, the Gepard is built on a modified Leopard 1 tank chassis, giving it strong mobility and battlefield survivability. Its main armament consists of two 35 mm Oerlikon KDA autocannons, capable of firing high-explosive and armour-piercing rounds at a very high rate. Each gun is fed by separate ammunition belts, and the system can engage targets with impressive accuracy even while on the move. What makes the Gepard particularly effective is its integrated radar system: one radar for target acquisition and another for tracking and fire control. This allows it to independently detect, track, and engage aerial threats without needing external guidance, making it highly autonomous for its era. The vehicle was originally produced by German defence firms including Krauss-Maffei Wegmann and Rheinmetall, both of which played major roles in its design and armament systems. Although phased out of frontline German service after the Cold War, the Gepard has seen renewed relevance in modern conflicts due to the growing importance of countering drones and low-altitude aerial threats. Its combination of mobility, radar-guided fire control, and rapid-firing 35 mm cannons makes it a surprisingly effective platform even decades after its introduction. #warthunder #warthundertanks #warthunderground
