@recycldstardust: This is the history that you’re not taught in school. This is the history of Native American and indigenous people and also the reason why there’s nutritional guidelines on your boxes of cereal. In Canada, the youngest members of Native American and indigenous nations were placed in residential schools forced. This was meant to assimilate them to non-native culture, but they were punished for speaking the language wearing the clothing or practicing any part of being native American or indigenous. It stripped them of their identities, but furthermore, they were malnourished and experimented on to see what amount of calories or what amount of nourishment would be needed in order to sustain life. These experiments led to Nut nutrition guidelines that are now still used in Canada today as well as the United States. #historytiktokcontest #nativeamerican #indigenous

My uncle was a residential survivor. He told me once that 13 siblings went to the schools. Only 8 came home. 💔

I learned about this in highschool. I remember thinking “why are we not spending at least a month on this topic? Why was it just a one day lesson??” Especially when my school was called Iroquois…. We spent more time learning about the war of 1812 than anything else.

This is why reconciliation is extremely important, this JUST happened last generation. Their kids are the first generation where this didn’t happen. I wish all Canadians treated our First Nations People with great respect.

My grandfather only spent two years in a residential school. Those two years were bad enough that he never talked about it. When the government offered money for every year you spent in a residential school he refused it. And talking about our Métis heritage was completely banned. I didn’t even know I was Métis until I was older and it got mentioned offhandedly when he wasn’t around.

I’m generally a proud Canadian but every time I think about the Residential Schools, the horror these children suffered, it makes me sick to my stomach! I really feel we need to do a much, much better job at teaching everyone about our history so we can do better.

My grandma was in residential school. She was a part of the food trials. She said on a good day she’d get a rotten potato.
