The MAC Method is my approach to helping restore a healthier balance between oxygen and carbon dioxide. Many people unknowingly over-breathe, which can contribute to feelings of stress, anxiety, and a fight-or-flight response. This practice is designed to slow the breath, relax the nervous system, and help you reconnect with the present moment. Step 1 – Inhale Breathe in slowly through your nose for 5 seconds, allowing your lungs to fill evenly from the bottom to the top. Imagine your lungs expanding in every direction. Step 2 – Expand At the top of the breath, gently expand your ribcage and lungs to their fullest comfortable capacity, creating a full 360° expansion, as though inflating a balloon. Step 3 – Hold Hold the breath for 5 seconds without straining. Stay relaxed. Step 4 – Exhale As you breathe out slowly, place your tongue just behind your top front teeth and create one continuous rolling “R” sound (or a gentle vibrating sound using your vocal cords) throughout the exhale. Empty your lungs completely before beginning the next breath. Step 5 – Repeat Complete 5 rounds of this breathing pattern. On the fifth round, after your final exhale, hold your breath for at least 30 seconds, or for as long as feels comfortable and safe. Then return to normal breathing. Repeat the full sequence as many times as you wish. With regular practice, this technique can help quiet a busy mind, encourage your body to shift out of a stressed state, and leave you feeling more centred, grounded, and present.
