@wagging.tail.proj: Hunter is lucky to be alive. The images are hard to look at. The reality was even harder. When our Animal Law Enforcement team responded to a call about a dog in a rear yard, they found a tan pitbull named Hunter — emaciated, covered in sores, some old and some still open. When our responding officer asked about food, the owner admitted he needed to buy more. When asked about veterinary care, the owner said he hadn’t taken Hunter to a vet, instead, he’d had “someone who knows dogs” come take a look. Our officer gave the owner an order: get Hunter to a vet by the end of the week, or surrender him to our care. We saved Hunter. What our veterinary team found during Hunter’s intake exam was devastating. He weighed just 38 pounds and scored a 1 out of 9 on the body condition scale, the lowest an emaciated dog can be and survive. He was severely anemic, had about 30 ticks attached to his body, an active flea infestation, an ear infection, and multiple open wounds and pressure sores on his legs, tail, and body. Despite his condition, Hunter stayed quiet, alert, and wagged his tail. He ate ravenously the moment food was offered. Our team got to work right away. They pulled every tick by hand, treated him for fleas and parasites, started antibiotics and ear medication, and began medications. Because dogs who’ve been starved can’t simply be fed normally again, Hunter was started on a careful, monitored refeeding plan to help his body recover safely. Hunter still had a long road ahead - healing wounds, rebuilding strength, and finally getting to be a dog without fear.
