The family pictures that will never be complete without him. We lost every version of him we never got to meet. We lost the sibling bond he and Eloise were supposed to share. We lost her big brother to grow up alongside. We lost family vacations with all of our babies together, and Christmas mornings with two little sets of footsteps running toward the tree. We lost the birthday parties and all the party themes I dreamed of creating for him. Teaching him to drive and seeing him graduate. We lost the day he would have fallen in love, and getting married. We lost the chance to watch him become a man. We lost wondering who he would look like. Hearing what his laugh would sound like as he got older. We lost every version of him we never got to meet. We lost ordinary days. The kind that seem so insignificant until you realize you’d give anything to have one. When you lose your first baby, you don’t just lose your child. You lose everything you ever dreamed and imagined for their life. Every milestone you prayed for. Every memory that would have been made. You grieve not only the life they lived, but the lifetime they never got to live. That’s the part so many people don’t see or understand.
