Disney had one of the most successful and beloved franchise in their hands and direct access to the person who created that “world.” And their answer to that was reject him and his ideas and instead make a series of films that pandered to the fandom.

He hasn't spoken much on the sequels, but Lucasfilm did use ideas of his in their sequel treatment. Rey being the focal point, Luke sacrificing himself in Ep8, they used a good bit of stuff he handed over. He was critical of TFA in saying it lacked creativity and the drive to do something new, but he said TLJ was "beautifully done" and he hasn't spoken on TROS.

alot of people liked the sequels. I had my hopes up after the force awakens, then when the last Jedi and rise of Skywalker came out, it was a huge let down.

A sequel trilogy based off the legend material would have done way better at the box office, kept existing fans happy, and made perfect use of Harrison, Mark, and Carrie being alive at once still.
