Some fish species, including cichlids and tilapia, protect their babies by carrying them inside their mouths. When danger appears, hundreds of tiny fry rush back inside, turning their mother’s mouth into a living shelter. This behaviour, known as mouthbrooding, can last for weeks. During that time, many mothers eat very little while keeping their young safe from predators.
