Brief History: The Grand Place, located in the heart of Brussels, Belgium, is one of the most beautiful medieval squares in Europe. It was originally a marketplace in the 11th century, where merchants sold goods brought by boat via the Senne River. By the 15th century, it became the political and economic center of the city, surrounded by opulent guildhalls, the Town Hall (Hotel de Ville), and the King’s House (Maison du Roi / Broodhuis). In 1695, the square was bombarded by French troops, destroying most of the wooden buildings. The citizens of Brussels quickly rebuilt it in stone, giving the square its current Baroque and Gothic appearance. Today, the Grand Place is a UNESCO World Heritage Site (since 1998) and a symbol of Belgian culture and craftsmanship. Interesting Facts: 1. Flower Carpet Festival: Every two years in August, the square is covered with a massive flower carpet made of begonias — about 500,000 flowers arranged in intricate patterns. 2. Guildhalls: Each guildhall on the square once belonged to a different trade guild — from brewers to butchers — and features ornate façades that reflect their wealth and pride. 3. Christmas Wonder: During winter, the square hosts one of Europe’s most beautiful Christmas markets and a giant illuminated Christmas tree. 4. Dimensions: The Grand Place measures roughly 110 by 68 meters. 5. Pop Culture: The square has appeared in several films and international events, including royal celebrations and concerts. #grandplace #belgium #brussels #europe
