This is a cool story but I doubt it happened. As a retired controller who worked SR71s First the two smaller AC would have been on VHF frequencies and the F18 would have been on UHF frequencies and odds are it would not have VHF in the plane, but the SR71 might of been listening to those frequencies, but he would of transmitted on TACTICAL frequencies and the controller would of been required to turn off the other frequencies to talk to the SR71. Also the controller would not get a speed above 999k. He could do a track ball entry and get a speed, but that takes a minute

As a former Harrier pilot and current Citation X pilot this is the best. Such a perfectly told pilot story! I’ve only heard this story twenty times and it NEVER gets old. “And a 12 year old was reaching for the mic button.”

I would pay several credits on Audible if they could could get the rights to his book, Sled Driver” and get the right person to read it. I pay for years worth of audible if they could find a recording of him reading it. I read it in 1993, and it still stands out as one of the best books I’ve ever read. It is the only book about flying that is better than Tom Wolf The Right Stuff

“Little hornet jet” coming from an sr71 pilot has to be the most “sit down little guy” moment in the air force ever

the SR71 is famous for being the one aircraft that doesn't maneuver or use physical defense items like chaff to avoid a locked on missile. they just speed up and wait for it to run out of fuel and self destruct.
