Another problem with all these units is that they only come with exhaust fittings for sliding sash windows. So most people have them stuck out of a tilted or side opening window with nothing blocking the warm air coming back in

they're bad because the thing doing the cooling, the thing that gets hot, is inside the area that it is cooling. it's a fundamental flaw of their design. it's why window A/C are significantly better and cheaper, and why places with built-in A/C will have the unit outside the building, usually a few feet from the building. the main benefits of a portable a/c are that they're convenient and you could install them in places where window units can't easily be installed. otherwise, they're trash

the single duct units literally take the air they just cooled and throw it outside, creating negative pressure and forcing hot outside air to come in.
