Behind every number was a child who lost a parent, a family that lost its home, or a life that ended far too soon. The people of Kobanî paid an unimaginable price to stop ISI&, and their story should never be forgotten. The Battle of Kobanî was one of the deadliest and most devastating battles in the fight against ISIS. In September 2014, ISI& surrounded the Kurdish city of Kobanî in West Kurdistan (Rojava) and launched a massive assaul!, using tanks, artillery, sniper&, suicid@ bombers, and thousands of fighters. Their goal was to capture the city and wipe out anyone who resisted. Between 200,000 and 400,000 civilians fled their homes, many leaving with nothing but the clothes they were wearing. Those who stayed behind were trapped under constant shelling and gunfire. Food became scarce. Clean water was limited. Electricity was cut. Hospitals were overwhelmed and struggled with severe shortages of medicine, medical equipment, blo@d supplies, and electricity. As fighting intensified, hospitals became destroyed or unusable, leaving only makeshift medical care available. Some wounded people died because doctors simply did not have the supplies or equipment needed to save them. Children grew up surrounded by explosions instead of classrooms. Many schools were destroyed or turned into military positions, leaving thousands of children without an education. Thousands of fighters were kill@d during the months-long battle. Hundreds of civilians also lost their lives. In June 2015, after ISI& had been pushed out, ISI& fighters disguised themselves as civilians and carried out another attack on Kobanî, killi@d more than 220 civilians—including women, children, and elderly people. By the end of the battle, more than 70% of Kobanî had been destroyed. Entire neighborhoods had disappeared. Homes, schools, hospitals, businesses, roads, and water systems were left in ruins.
