@bats.ukraine: How did a roof repair nearly end in tragedy, leaving hundreds dead? On June 22, we were contacted by a man from the Dnipropetrovsk region. During roof repair work, he discovered a maternity colony of bats. As a reminder, June is the peak season when bats give birth and gather in maternity groups consisting of young mothers and their pups, which they raise together. Unfortunately, the mother bats were frightened by the repair work and flew away. This left the man with hundreds of baby bats in his care. The situation required urgent intervention, so our team immediately headed out to help. At the site, we found nearly 400 pygmy pipistrelle pups of various ages, along with several adult females and pregnant bats. Our specialists did everything possible to help the bats in the most natural way. Near the house, by the river, we installed concrete bat boxes produced by our team. We placed the pups inside and opened the entrances after sunset. By that time, the young mothers were already circling around the bat boxes and trying to retrieve their pups, so we are optimistic about their chances of survival. Most likely, when the original roost was disturbed, the mothers fled to nearby attics and were therefore able to return quickly after sunset and find their young. Sadly, not all mothers and pups survived the stress of the event. Many suffered injuries that were incompatible with life. We are deeply grateful to the man who cared enough to seek help, because this story could have ended much more tragically for the animals. We would also like to remind everyone: if you discover bats during renovation or repair work, please stop immediately and contact specialists. You may save hundreds of vulnerable lives.
