if you think the thing was anyone BUT Childs, you need to rewatch the movie. the ending scene very obviously shows that Childs was the thing.. they made a pact to not drink anything anyone offered, Childs drank from what MacReady offered him.. along with many other obvious clues that gave it away at the end

the film is an allegory for the inane paranoia spurred by the cold war so it makes total sense that they would both be human! its also awesome because it causes audiences to speculate heavily about who the thing is which echoes the same idea

I think in the book though The Thing wasn’t necessarily malicious. It sees the assimilation as a benevolent process of preservation. It believes the assimilation allows the organism to live on forever in the collective hive mind. So in its eyes it didn’t win if they are both human.

Carpenter got sick and tired of people asking him about the movie so he said the Video game adaptation got it right ,In that game Neither Childs or Mcready was that thing.
