you could also mention that water is a bad conductor and thus has a high resistance. And by increasing the size of the cunductor you reduce the resistance.

Made something similar using a fet. Was a water sensor for an alarm system. System alerted the remote monitor and started a pump. If the alarm didn’t clear there was time to send someone out.
