Why is he famous? * He became king at about 13 years old after the death of his father, Amalric I. * As a child, he was diagnosed with leprosy (Hansen’s disease), a progressive illness that eventually left him blind and unable to walk. * Despite his illness, he proved to be a capable military and political leader. * He is especially known for resisting the expansion of the Muslim leader Saladin. Military achievements One of Baldwin’s greatest successes was the Battle of Montgisard in 1177. Although badly outnumbered, Baldwin led a Crusader force that defeated Saladin’s army, earning a reputation for courage and determination. Legacy Baldwin IV’s reign is often remembered as a last period of relative stability for the Crusader kingdom. After his death, political divisions weakened Jerusalem, and just two years later Saladin captured the city following the Battle of Hattin.
