Most swimmers count their laps. Very few count their good strokes. A session of 2000 metres sounds productive. But 2000 metres of what? If the catch was only really there for the first 400, if the rotation faded halfway through, if the last 600 were survival swimming with a stroke that barely resembled the first length, then the honest number for that session is much smaller than the one on the watch. This is the difference between swimmers who improve for years and swimmers who plateau for years while training just as hard. The improvers measure quality. The plateauers measure distance. Both are in the water the same amount of time. Only one of them is accumulating strokes that actually make them better. The shift does not require training less. It requires paying attention differently. Instead of asking how far did I swim today, ask how many lengths did I hold the stroke I am trying to build. That number is the real training log. Everything above it is fitness work, which has value, but it is not technique work, and confusing the two is how a swimmer trains for five years and swims with the same stroke they started with. One practical habit. At the end of each session, give yourself an honest percentage. How much of today was swum with the stroke I want? Watch that number over weeks. Getting it from 40 percent to 70 percent will do more for your swimming than adding another thousand metres ever will. The watch counts the distance. Only you can count the quality. What is your honest percentage from your last session? Tell me in the comments.
