Wilson created a futuristic airless basketball that’s getting all the hype on social media, and the $2,500 price tag didn’t stop it from selling out. The limited edition Airless Gen 1 is a 3D printed basketball that allows air to pass through it — unlike a traditional basketball that’s pumped with air. Still, it can be dribbled and nearly fits the required specifications of a regulation ball, according to Wilson. At $2,500, the Airless Gen 1 is more than 10 times the price of Wilson’s official NBA game ball, which goes for about $200 on the official site. The airless ball, made in collaboration with retailer New Era, has been the topic of discussion for influencers and sports enthusiasts curious to see how it holds up next to modern basketballs. Despite the naysayers, the limited edition basketball has sold out on Wilson’s website, and it’s unclear if it will return any time soon. Wilson didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider. Those who manage to snag one will receive a carrying case, a display stand, and a customized luggage tag. Time will tell if the Airless Gen 1 will become a collectible or the foundation of a new era of basketball. (Via: @Marques Brownlee)
