Walkable Cities | A Monthly Series June 2026 Feature: Lille, France 🇫🇷 I usually share walkable finds, transit tips, and people-first places around Salt Lake City, but through this monthly series I’m also sharing a little bit of my travels, spotlighting cities around the world that are best explored on foot (or by transit). These are places where slowing down is part of the experience. Last month’s spotlight: Córdoba, Spain This month: Lille, France Lille surprised me in the best way. It wasn’t a city I knew much about before visiting, but it quickly became one of my favorite places to wander. Between the colorful Flemish buildings, cozy cafés, and charming cobblestone streets, it’s a city that invites you to slow down. Some of my favorite walkable spots include: 📍 Grand Place (Place du Général-de-Gaulle) The heart of the city and the perfect place to start your walk. Grab a coffee, find a bench, and soak in the energy before exploring the surrounding streets. 📍 Vieux-Lille (Old Lille) My favorite neighborhood to wander. Every street seems to lead to another beautiful building, boutique, bookstore, or café. 📍 Rue de la Monnaie One of Lille’s oldest streets and one I found myself strolling more than once. It’s lined with historic buildings, independent shops, and little details that make you want to slow your pace. 📍 Aux Merveilleux de Fred If there’s one sweet treat to try in Lille, it’s a merveilleux. They’re made fresh throughout the day, and watching them assemble each one is almost as fun as eating it. 📍 La Vieille Bourse Step into the courtyard and you’ll often find people playing chess, browsing secondhand books, or simply enjoying a quiet moment. It’s one of those places that makes you want to linger. 📍 Coffee stops throughout Vieux-Lille Honestly, one of the best parts of Lille is simply wandering until a café catches your eye. Slow mornings and unplanned stops are part of the experience. What I love most about Lille is how easy it is to explore on foot. The city feels human-scaled, everything is close together, and there’s beauty tucked into almost every block. It’s the kind of place that reminds me some of the best travel memories happen when you’re not rushing to the next attraction.
