here's a fact: the oomycete (slide 4) currently holds the title of longest species name (181 characters). the taxonomists who discovered it deliberately named the species after the full ceremonial name of bangkok, thailand. they tagged the suffix "-nonopsis" onto the very end, which roughly translates to "not looking like". essentially, the scientists gave it this massive title simply because they joked that the microscopic organism does not look like the city of bangkok. it is an obligate plant parasite on Crepis pyrenaica, a member of the hawksbeard plant genus Crepis. the species was found on a specimen of C. pyrenaica found in Germany!
