This is a 31 year old song. How are kids arguing about its meaning now? It encapsulates a very specific moment in time in Britain and Jarvis’ experience as a young man in London in the 80s. You need to understand a lot of what was happening at the time - Thatcherism, strikes, class division, etc to fully comprehend it. Or you can look at it like the universal experience it transmits of felling out of place and out of class.
