I Looked it up, the fortress fell during the bozhou rebellion. To take this fortress the Ming dynasty had to utilize an army of roughly 240,000 soldiers. They besieged it for 114 days, and their cannons couldn't penetrate the walls. They lost (an estimated, because the Ming dynasty erased their casualties to keep imperial prestige) between 40,000-80,000 soldiers to take the fortress. In order to take it the Ming launched a night attack where soldiers rappelled up the cliffs in the night, snuck into the fortress and lit fires, which led to the surrender of the defenders.

Why would they want to conquer it? Large city's are important trade hubs and offer fresh reqruits. A fortress in the jungle is useless..

One might try during the hottest part of the summer to set the forest all around on fire and hope the fire spreads inside the fortress. If that doesn’t work at least he would have cleared the forest and can just wait for food supply to run out. No point in direct attack.
