Beppu is one of Japan’s most famous hot spring cities, located in Oita Prefecture on the island of Kyushu. It’s known for its incredible geothermal activity, with steam rising from streets, houses, and hot springs all over the city. I spent 2 days and 1 night here. Here’s what I did: ♨️ Visited the famous Beppu Hells (Jigoku), a collection of unique geothermal hot springs with different colors and landscapes. 🚶 Strolled around the town near my hotel to enjoy Beppu’s unique atmosphere. 🏨 Stayed at Beppu Hajime Hotel, where I relaxed and enjoyed the onsen after a day of exploring. 💡 My opinion: I don’t recommend visiting every Hell. Oniyama Jigoku, where crocodiles are kept, and Shiraike Jigoku, which displays large tropical fish. While these sites are part of the official Hell route, they made me uncomfortable and, in my opinion, don’t offer the kind of experience I’m looking for. I’d recommend focusing on the natural geothermal sites instead, which are just as impressive. 📍 Where it is: In Oita Prefecture, on the east coast of Kyushu. 🚆 How to go: Beppu is easily accessible by train from Fukuoka or Oita. If you’re exploring Kyushu, renting a car is a great option to combine Beppu with Yufuin, Mount Aso, and the surrounding countryside. Hi, I’m Marie 👋 I share spots, itineraries and practical tips to help you explore Japan. I’m also a Japan travel planner, creating structured and realistic trips from A to Z. ✨ I also have a Japan Guide with 1000+ curated spots, an interactive map, and everything you need to plan your trip.
