You get home from work, you're tired, you're stressed, and you're fed up, and you can't be bothered to think. And so you flop onto the sofa, and you scroll your phone, you find something funny, and you scroll on. Somehow, two hours pass, and you've done absolutely nothing. But that's the point, because doing nothing will change nothing. And that's what some people want. About 2000 years ago, the Roman poet Juvenal noticed the same pattern back then as today. He argued that the Roman people were once those who commanded armies and elected leaders, and now they decide only two things, bread and circuses. If you give a population cheap food and endless entertainments, they will never revolt. They will never even complain. Juvenal wasn't saying that entertainment is bad, but rather that comfort can be a political tool, because if somebody is well fed and distracted, they will stop asking difficult questions. They will stop caring who is in control of what is being done in their name. Of course, these days the circuses are not in the Coliseum, but rather in the feed, the stream, or the Netflix binge. In the 1980s, the philosopher Neil Postman argued that while George Orwell feared we would be oppressed by some fascist force, the reality is closer to Aldous Huxley's vision. Today we are oppressed by distraction, and Postman argued that we don't need censorship in a world where no one will read. We don't need tyranny if people are too entertained to notice what is going on. The question isn't whether we will enjoy the circus. Of course we enjoy the circus. That's the entire point. The question is what we have stopped caring about while we are watching it.
