The last time I was in Greece I heard a Greek guide say to the English group “if you want to see the rest of them you can go to YOUR museum bc you took it” everyone laughed but I was really impressed

“But if the British Museum gave her back they’d have to give back everything!” It’s almost like the BRITISH museum should have BRITISH artifacts instead of artifacts taken from across the globe. It’s one thing if it’s a gift, but I highly doubt the country of Greece gifted her to the Brits. I’ll also argue this about American museums!

I went to a lot of the museums in Greece and pretty much all of them had spaces for artifacts that were empty because the British Museum had it. It’s like they were saying “this is where this would be IF WE HAD IT”

when I was in Athens I asked if it's true that they leave a space for her bc the British stole her and the docent said "well... we like to say she's on loan..." and an older docent like 15 feet away exclaimed "THEY STOLE HER!"

I just returned from my trip to Greece and I kept saying over and over to my husband. How can they just take them and put them in their museums? You know where they belong and my father-in-law who is a Greek citizen said if they remove them from the museums they have nothing worth looking at, and they will shut down all of the museums . Also my Roman Empire

Museums need to be decolonized. There are ethical ways to loan and share artifacts, and not every artifact needs to be shared. Some do best displayed in their homeland.
