The Soldier Who Was Zipped Into A Body Bag Alive Roy Benavidez is remembered as one of the bravest soldiers in American history, a man who refused to die. Born into poverty in Texas and orphaned as a child, Benavidez worked the fields before joining the US Army and eventually earning his place in the elite Special Forces. In May 1968, during the Vietnam War, a 12-man reconnaissance team became surrounded by a huge enemy force and was in danger of being wiped out. When Benavidez heard their desperate radio calls over the airwaves, he grabbed a knife, jumped aboard a rescue helicopter, and headed into the heart of the battle to help. What followed is almost beyond belief. Over roughly six hours, Benavidez repeatedly exposed himself to intense gunfire to reach the trapped men, carry the wounded to safety, and recover critical documents. He was shot multiple times, bayoneted, and struck by grenade shrapnel again and again, suffering dozens of separate wounds. At one point he fought an enemy soldier in brutal hand-to-hand combat. Despite his catastrophic injuries, he kept organising the defence and loading wounded comrades onto the helicopter, saving the lives of eight men. By the time he was finally evacuated, Benavidez was so gravely wounded and motionless that he was believed to be dead. As he was about to be zipped into a body bag, unable to speak or move, he summoned the last of his strength and spat in the attending doctor’s face to signal he was still alive.
