My general tip for facial proportions are to remember the distance between the eye brow line and the nose like and measure that a space up and down and it’s fun because you can play around with those a lot

I think this happened because you drew his face too wide. Also, trying to make his eyes smaller than in your usual style actually made things worse, because anatomically, the distance between the eyes should be equal to the width of one eye
