No. Insulin resistance is not the main cause of every type of hypertension. High blood pressure can develop through several different mechanisms, including inherited genetic factors, salt sensitive or low renin hypertension, kidney disease, hormonal disorders, increased activity of the sympathetic nervous system, and age related stiffening of the arteries. While insulin resistance is a major contributor in many people with obesity, metabolic syndrome, or type 2 diabetes, many people with hypertension have normal insulin sensitivity. Hypertension is therefore a group of conditions with multiple underlying causes, and insulin resistance is only one of them, not a universal explanation.
