🐾🐾 Sadly, this happens, and too often at that. Instead of a well-deserved retirement with their handler in a home (Police Department dogs as well), they're dumped at a County or Rescue Shelter, and labeled "aggressive", which some are trained to do (think PD dogs running down a suspect). There are files of letters from US soldiers 🦮 & police officers 🐕🦺 who have tried to gain access to THEIR dogs. These incredible dogs work for 8-10 years and instead of hanging out with family, they're in a 3x6 foot cell. The average wait time (once the dog has been located) can be 18+ months to go through the appeal's process. Many of these dumped dogs need to be treated differently from stray or regular surrendered dogs ... i.e., dogs who've been sniffing for IEDs, often suffer from PTSS - frequent explosions and gunshots can make dogs anxious & unpredictable - which is why an experienced handler should take over retirement care. Imagine spending 8-10 years in the desert, with 25 to 50 people giving you attention every day, where you work & play with your closest "buddy" ... and then it's off into doggy jail where you're lucky to get cheap food, and maybe a towel to lie down on. No daily hugs, head scritches and enrichment play. These dogs get anxious from boredom and having lost "their human" connection. These people above spent THREE YEARS SEARCHING for this dog, and whose days are now severely limited. I fight against this nonsense by writing letters to the US Military for military working K9s, and to State, County & City/Town Officials for police K9s, to release them to their handlers. The dogs who get publicly adopted to much fanfare during awards ceremonies, receive a ceremonial ribbon and a chunk of medal (seriously, think the pups care??), those might go home with their handlers. Why? Because there's some journalistic oversite, documenting the outcome for these dogs. Please, I need help writing to all of your Local to State Officials, and the US Military to give these dogs the dignity of retiring and dying in a loving family. THESE BRAVE DOGS HAVE CERTAINLY EARNED THAT for providing protection & companionship during danger (cue patriotic music 🎵 🎶).
