Michigander here. Most people who don’t live here have no idea what these lakes are like. They are like freshwater seas, not lakes really. They have tides and dangerous currents. They stay pretty cold all summer, esp Superior. I live on Lake Michigan. I usually don’t swim in the lake until July. The world is on the edge of serious water crises all over. We are very fortunate and I’ll never live anywhere else. Our water isn’t for sale. Can’t have it, world. Sorry.

It’s an inland sea. The storms on the Great Lakes can pack winds that are equal to hurricane force and anyone that lives near any of them will tell you they are not “just a lake”.

Lake Baikal is actually the biggest freshwater lake by volume. Superior has more surface area but Baikal is way deeper. It holds 20% of the world’s freshwater, so about 2x as much water as Lake Superior.

Lake Baikal in Russia has more freshwater in it than Lake Superior. So the world's largest freshwater lake measured by water volume is Lake Baikal, but measured by surface area, it is Lake Superior.
