As a mother in law, she’s 1000000% correct. I’m the extended family now. And as a daughter in law who suffered because my husband chose his mom’s need over his wife (me) I make sure my kids know, their partners and their family come before all others.

Hot take. (And it really shouldn’t be) parents on BOTH sides immediately become EXTENDED FAMILY the second you say “I do”. Your first and only responsibility is to your spouse and your children. Period. If you then have capacity and the desire to show deference and put in effort with parents who respect you, your spouse, and your kids, then pop off.

My thing is when do you set this boundary? I feel like you should really start setting it when you’re getting serious with your partner the first and second Thanksgiving or Christmas holidays you know you’re still getting to know people trying to figure out who celebrates what what holidays are bigger deal for each family but I feel like once you start getting more serious with your partner and you’re starting to go down that path being together 2+ years you guys are clearly headed towards an engagement or marriage then I feel like that’s the time that you should start setting boundaries and being like hey this is you know what we’re gonna do for holidays going forward. I’m in that awkward stage where it’s clear that my boyfriend and I are gonna have a future together but when it comes to events, his family wants him somewhere. My family wants me somewhere and we also have our families not living in the same town so just becomes a little bit messy.
