Shares jumped over 50%, and headlines are calling it the best results ever seen on a depression trial - even better than psilocybin. But that ranking stacks separate pharma-lead trials side by side, not a true head to head test. Each trial used different patients, different timepoints (four weeks versus six), and a different placebo response, none of which shows up on a simple bar chart. LSD and psilocybin are also chemically distinct. LSD gets trapped longer inside the 5-HT2A receptor and binds more broadly across other receptor types, which may explain its longer eight hour sessions versus psilocybin's six. Definium and Compass (who have a psilocybin product called COMP360) also both minimize therapeutic support during dosing, betting the molecule alone drives outcomes, a bet that growing integration research suggests may not be right. The bottom line is that LSD looks genuinely promising for depression, but "LSD beats every other depression treatment" remains untested until someone actually runs that trial. Additionally, pharmaceutical companies leading the research are incentivized to talk up their own products, play down others' findings, and to discount the importance of psychological support around the experience as it detracts from their patentable product. Scrutiny of their results is advised.
