i’ve heard it this way. Tell them what you’re gonna tell them. Tell them. And then tell them what you told them.

In the design world we call this affordance - you changed the affordance of the card machine and made it less likely to be used incorrectly, because it’s not perceived to be possible.

I struggle with this so much because I am a reader. It’s how I learn, it’s what I enjoy, and I don’t enjoy repetition (that’s what studying is for), so to have to repeat things 4x in different ways, the framing of what we’re going to do, bothers me so much. This is a good reminder. 👍🏻

in engineering, this is called poka-yoke! it's a Japanese word that essentially means creating something that can't be built incorrectly or "error proofed"!

I own a bakery, I used to write emails explaining why our planned closures were necessary. NO ONE read them. Now it’s ‘CLOSED (DATE - DATE) CUT OFF FINAL DELIVERY (DATE/TIME)’ Nothing else, size 70 font, stuck on every single box 2 weeks before. Lmao it’s infuriating but it works!

I learned this during my first year of teaching high school. Clear written out instructions were almost never followed, so I had to change up how I format my assignments/instructions in order to avoid confusion and the million questions that follow. I'm great at coming up with clear systems now though 😅

I know it’s not the point and am just sharing for fun, but in card reader situations, I am a person who absolutely does read and it has the exact same end result of mutual confusion because helpful signs are so rare so I’m often scanning the whole POS trying to find the little tap thingy XD

A course I took on learning how to learn calls this building the mental hooks to hang the information that you’re going to give them

I sent a lot of instructions to clients via email, and I start off the email by saying by the end of this email you will be able to do XYZ. Then I list the high level steps. Then I break down each step below.

You are brilliant! Being neurodivergent makes it so difficult for me to communicate effectively and this is so helpful for me!

As a screenwriter, this is what the coverage, feedback and editing phase is. You have to find out where you left interpretations open that you didn't mean to.
