Gustavo :
If you're willing to have a bad credit score for three years, you can choose to stop paying the debt. If you do, make sure you do not make any payments or enter into any payment arrangements during those three years, even if the creditor contacts you.
For example, if you have already gone a year without paying and then agree to a payment arrangement, the time you've already accumulated may no longer count, and the three year period may start again. That's why some people end up with debts that are still active many years later they make a payment arrangement, fail to keep it, and the debt becomes active again.
If you decide to borrow R200,000 and later stop paying after a few months, be prepared to have a poor credit score for three years. Once the full three years have passed without making any payments, acknowledging the debt, or receiving a court judgment or summons, you can contact TransUnion and explain that the debt is more than three years old, that you made no payments or payment arrangements during that period, and that no judgment was granted against you. You can then request that the debt be removed from your credit report as a prescribed debt.
Be confident when explaining your request, as TransUnion may ask questions to verify the information. Also remember that the three year period starts from the date you last made a payment.
