mutliclassing for mechanical benefits is lame. multiclassing for story purposes is awesome.

I mostly agree with Aabria on this one. While multiclassing CAN be fun and interesting most of the time you just end up watering down your character. Also, Gandalf was a bard.

This exact reason is why I stopped playing DND and started playing PF2E

Story tellers multiclass when it makes sense.
Powergamers multiclass when it doesn't.

Absolutely agree. Multiclassing for a planned build is just a power fantasy. Multiclassing based on actual events in your game is the way it should be.

Multiclassing should be meaningful. Not just ‘oh I want this ability, so I’ll take that. I want that one too so I’ll take a level there too!”

I do agree with her take, but I will say there are exceptions. example when Vax multi classes to paladin because of the story.

Crazy to see so many people agree when this is such a hard disagree for me! I definitely believe that going 3 classes makes things messy and anything over that is kind of egregious but I’ve seen plenty of fascinating character work done with multiclassing! Even just sticking to D20 and CR stuff, I loved both Gorgug and Fjords multiclasses and how they impacted their stories. Plus even though it was JUST for mechanics Chetney and Saccharina were fun builds where the multiclass felt more natural than anything. I feel like annoying minmax bros give so many concepts that can really heighten a game/story a bad image just because they can’t behave themselves lol

I multiclass for story... we dont really do combat so both my major characters are multiclasses (technically) and I dont use that fact in combat because I dont like combat I just want it to be over so I can roleplay

I live in the middle here. There's a bit of a difference between a rogue with the entertainer background picking up some bard levels and someone starting a sorcerer then taking two levels in fighter and a level in cleric or some other non sense.

the problem with multiclassing is that ultimately dnd 5e punishes you and the core issue of dnd 5e is that choices are so limited that the only choices you consistently get to make are what subclass you are

I just wish there was a Rules as written game role that lets you multiclass into a singular class. I want to be both a samurai fighter and a echo night fighter. Just take away one of the extra attack you get at level 5

Isn't Gandalf just an ancient being race with innate magick that leveled in bard, scholar and warrior?

ooooh I don't multi class for minmax reasons, it's for vibes, it's because my character did something epic that was classy but for another class than their own

THANK YOU! Multiclassing once is fine, but after that… idk. I feel like people just like go on a power trip. Zero actual character development

Multiclassing is huge for characters development. You have a level 3 thief rogue who gets drafted into war, he’s gonna be great on infiltration missions, but he’s also gonna get second wind, he’s gonna have more battle iq, and 3 levels later, you’re gonna have a battle master thief and that’s a terrifying foe.

First off. Gandalf is not multiclassed. He calls himself a wizard but is a monoclassed paladin.

multiclassing is a fantastic way to find/create a more exact version of a character concept. sometimes a single class doesn't help to evoke the sort of character you want to portray; but multiclassing will. it's not a power fantasy thing, it's a great tool for being even more intentional with your character design.
