(All Allegedly) The "witch's well" (guesstimated to be built around the 18th/19th century, was central to Mount Holly's early community life. Legend says a woman accused of witchcraft was thrown into the well as punishment. Townspeople reportedly avoided the well afterward, believing it was cursed. Though no records confirm it, the tale became part of Mount Holly's local lore. Benjamin Franklin was also linked to the “Witch Trials in Mount Holly”, though many believe it to be a hoax or a mockery. If you're interested in reading the original article linked to him and the trials it's easily found online. There are many different interpretations on it. What are your thoughts? Have you ever visited the well/altar? They have the Witch's Well secured inside of a fenced in area, but you can still see it from the outside of the fence. It's overgrown with plants and moss now, but you can find photos of what it looked like before it was unkept online. Legend has it that if you knock on it, something (or someone) knocks back to you. Locals also say that if you put your ear up to the altar you can hear scratching noises. I didn't experience anything, but the tales behind it are interesting. Additionally, it's only a couple of minutes away from another local attraction - The Burlington County Prison Museum (which I highly recommend visiting). There's a lot of history and eery lore there as well. Also want to note - this post is not meant to minimize the real, tragic history of witchcraft persecution in early America. Actual events, such as the Witch Trials of 1692, resulted in real executions, mass hysteria, and devastating human suffering. This post is not intended to dismiss or make light of historical atrocities. If you visit the monuments please be respectful of them and the rules of the land. #fall #halloween #newjersey #witchtrials #spookyseason
