People confuse love with behavior, and that’s where this debate gets lost. A person can genuinely love someone and still choose to cheat, because love is a feeling, while loyalty, honesty, respect, and faithfulness are daily choices. Cheating doesn’t automatically prove there was never love, but it does prove that the person made a selfish decision that damaged the relationship. That’s why saying, “If they loved you, they would never cheat,” oversimplifies something that’s much more complicated. People lie to those they love, disappoint those they love, and even betray those they love. None of that makes the behavior acceptable—it simply means that love alone isn’t enough to sustain a healthy relationship. A strong relationship requires love and integrity, accountability, trust, and consistent actions. So yes, someone can love you and still cheat, but that love doesn’t excuse the betrayal or erase the consequences of the choices they made.
