@gemini_nt91: THE STORY OF RENE BATERBONIA Rene was born and raised in Talacogon, Agusan del Sur, coming from a simple family. His father was a tricycle driver, while his mother sold fish to help support their family of seven siblings. Despite the hardship, Rene dreamed of using his talent in basketball to give his family a better life. Standing at about 6 feet and 4 inches tall, he quickly became known as a skilled player. He practiced on simple outdoor courts in their town, and because of his skill and dedication, he was called "Mr. MVP". His first major success came when he represented the Davao Region in the Palarong Pambansa 2025. He helped his team win their very first basketball championship, and he was named Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the tournament. Later, Rene promised that he would play for the Ateneo Blue Eagles in the UAAP. According to his family, he planned to send most of his allowance to their home to help with their daily needs. On June 8, 2026, Rene passed away during a team-building activity in Aurora with fellow student-athlete Divine Adili. According to authorities, the cause of his death was asphyxia due to drowning, while the investigation into the incident is ongoing. He was laid to rest on June 24, 2026, in his hometown of Talacogon, Agusan del Sur. He was buried at the new municipal cemetery in Barangay Labnig. Before his burial, thousands of people attended his wake and expressed sympathy for his family.
