I heard in a podcast once that someone who self-isolates because they are depressed or nihilistic is wholly different from someone who is lonely, because ‘loneliness’ implies the absence of another person, meaning the loneliness itself is a sort of wishing or reaching out for connection. With loneliness, there is ofc some sort of buffer between a person and the rest of the world but it’s not because of a lack of want for connection necessarily. I think about that every time I read about a lonely character. “Martyr” by Kaveh Akbar is such a beautiful depiction of loneliness imo

this is a really fascinating take. layering the moments of a character to vary in different stages of loneliness because life day to day is different and their ability to be lifted in that or become more nihilistic about their own circumstances. you’re really living out a detailed human life that’s different from you but rooted in a similar experience (inseparable since it’s being written from you), so can you not project yourself onto that? applying metacognition for a fictional self. playing god i feel. and yet as humans who inherently cannot operate in that state of detachment in the way we describe an ever present being in control - i wonder if thats fully possible at all?

so loneliness needs to be treated as an experience instead of a personality trait?

Have you read One's Company by Ashley Hutson by chance? :) I’m not a stellar book reviewer/critic, but I thought it was a realistic depiction of loneliness-induced psychosis.
