Boojum Trees or Sirios (Fouquieria columnaris) are a succulent endemic to the arid penninsula of Baja California, Mexico. These plants have a distinct spindly appearance given by their tall, slender trunks that typically reach heights of 70ft. The largest of them all, as seen in the last clip, reaches a height of around 86.5ft. Small leafy branches prutrude from the entirety of their woody trunk, where they store water in their leaves. Less than an inch of rain falls annually, making water storage a neccessity. These trees prefer well drained soils and thus will be found concentrated in areas of volcanic loams and decomposed granites. Boojums can be found from sea level to 4750ft in elevation, typically on alluvial planes, mesas, and hillsides. The plant held much importance to indigenous Seri people, known as “cototaj” in their language. It is depicted often in cave paintings in the area, some dating back to 7500 BCE. Given their significance, they believed touching their branches brought the gale force winds common in the area. Boojum trees are a unique sight to behold and were a welcome companion in field studies. At sunset the silhouettes Boojums and Cardones competing for their spot in the horizon makes for a breath taking view that cannot be missed. Bahia de los Angeles and Baja California at large is a unique place that shouldn’t not be missed! #lepidodendron #baja #bajacalifornia #mexico #mardecortes #bahiadelosangeles #xybca #fyp #biology #ecology #boojum #sirio #samsclubscanandgo #walmart #cockerspaniel #cockerspanielsoftiktok #cockerspanielpuppy #perro
