For many years, Liverpool was the route of trades due to the docks. In the 1970s, Liverpool’s port and manufacturing base began to decline, causing over 80,000 people to lose their jobs. Deindustrialisation and the decline of the city's port sector resulted in massive job losses, with inner-city unemployment reaching 30% to 50% in some areas. Cabinet papers, released under the 30 year rule in 2011, showed that Thatcher's Chancellor Sir Geoffrey Howe [now Lord Howe] argued that Liverpool should be left to "managed decline". Lord Howe told Thatcher to “not over-commit scarce resources to Liverpool.” In other words, deeming the city to be a waste of resources. The city had been hit by riots in the 1980s, following racial police brutality. The Toxteth riots were motivated by police brutality, but also the decline in Liverpool’s economy. Lord Howe believed it would be a waste of money to revuild the riot-hit communities of Liverpool. . . Northerners are faced with discrimination due to their accents. Scousers are commonly viewed as ‘untrustworthy’ and ‘violent’ due to their heavy accent. Because of this, Scousers have their accents trained out of them to sound more appealing and professional when it comes to applying for jobs and university. Outside of the region, there is problems of employment bias. A lot of scousers are refused the job due to their accent. . Scouse is not a dirty accent. The accent is born from the deep Irish routes within the city. An estimated 75% of scousers have Irish ancestry due to the 19th-century immigration. The city is closely connected to Ireland, and the accent is shaped by Irish Gaelic. Scouse is not a dirty accent, it is the result of two communities coming together. Irish and English. #northsouthdivide #uk #england #classism #liverpool
