I also attempted a chaos garden and I think birds ate all my seeds since I didn’t burry them 🫠

Hiiii! Likely what is happening is the birds and wildlife are coming and taking a lot of them before they can germinate. I would suggest mixing your seeds with some sand and then using that mix in the soils. You might need to cover it with a top soil. It probably requires more water than you want right at the start to just get everything going! Good luck!

a lot of ca natives need cold stratification. plant your seeds in the fall when u see rain in the forecast and then wait till spring!

Soil looks kindddd of dead, perhaps you should mix in a bag of amending soil! Other factors could be birds and bugs! I had the same issue for a year that I fixed a bit by planting a BUNCH of sunflowers and legumes to bring in nitrogen and break up the soil. The sunflowers also take out a lot of heavy metals that may be slowing down your plants. After this, a bunch of the native seeds started popping up this spring! Earwigs can also be annoying so I recommend providing some leaves, rocks, and bark for spiders to hide under to take care of pests

Just suck it up and buy transplants. You have to water the first year no matter what.

never trust bags if mix seeds that say "wildflowers" just buy individual packets of the seeds your looking for and mix those yourself. premixed bags are mostly just dry bulk that won't grow into anything

Mulch. And any kind. I live in a desert and planted in a spot with landscaping rock one yr and got more than planting in bare dirt. Mulch will help protect seedlings and keep water on the ground. Keep trying, you’ll get it💕

Do the marigolds test. If you can’t grow a marigold then maybe gardening is not for you 😂

Test the soil. It may be too alkaline or acidic for wildflowers. You may be able to amend the soil.

Is the tree shading out the area? Also, I suggest compost, watering every other day or daily if it’s warm where you are.

I’m in Missouri and do all natives, and in my experience natives take longer than non natives. Also after a few years I am just now trying seeds in controlled areas, but natives usually year 1-Sleep, year 2-creep, year 3 leap. I would maybe try to find a local native plant shop for some things already established, then fill in with some seeds💞Don’t give up 😁

something I've recently discovered works amazing for germinating seeds is straw. I bought a couple bags from a big box store and I've had much more success applying a few inches of straw on top of the seeds and watering deeply. then just lightly water it every day or 2 for 2-3 weeks and you'll see a lot more sprouts

Starting that much seed takes a ton of water and some seeds need cover, some need light to germinate. I would try again but read the packets and do a more succession planting style thing so you can cover what needs it and what doesn't etc.
