I personally believe that one of the main reasons we can’t get socialized healthcare (or socialized anything) in this country is because if we had it, there’d be no incentive for people to join the military.

The free and equal distribution of healthcare, the substantial reduction in childcare costs (I was a licensed childcare provider for the DOD and EVERYONE, even o-6 and above, qualified for some degree of childcare subsidy), the tax free shopping….

My dad, a retired USAF pilot, tried to explain to me why socialized healthcare was bad while driving to his socialized healthcare appointment on the military base. Like I do not understand.

Do you know what percentage of the population is in the military? You think that’s where the defense budget goes? One missile costs more than what the DoD spends on 100 soldiers benefits in a year

I always say this… the military is the example that socialized healthcare, education and guaranteed income is possible in the US. Those programs can just be expanded.

this is a valid take but also a nuanced one. because in the military you’re making a big sacrifice to get those things. you are entering a place that provides benefits at the expense of a lot of things that go against you

And the joke is the benefits don’t even cost as much you think. The majority of defense spending goes straight into the pockets of private contractors who charge 5k per screw when they cost 50 cents at a hardware store
