Principal here🙋🏾♂️. I was an AP who felt just as you do now!! Please know that people are in love with positions, titles, and promotion! People see great things in you, but you’re great where you are! If the Head Principal role is for you, God will make it clear to YOU, so keep being great where you are.✊🏾

First year principal here, I've spent a lot of time reflecting on the kind of leader I want to be. My former principal wasn't someone you saw in classrooms very often or leading from the front. That experience gave me a clear picture of the kind of leader I hoped to become. I promised myself that if I were ever blessed with the opportunity to lead a school, I would be present for my students, my staff, and my community. Even though I didn’t desire to be one! I want to be in classrooms. I want to know my students by name, support my teachers, celebrate successes, work through challenges together, and help build a school culture where everyone feels seen, valued, and supported. Leadership isn't about sitting behind a desk; it's about showing up consistently, building relationships, and serving others. I've learned that if God has called you to leadership, He will align every star and open every door in His perfect timing. The title may make you the principal, but true leadership is earned through humility, service, consistency, and the impact you have on the lives of others. I'm still learning every day, but if there's one thing I hope people remember, it's not my title, it's that I was present.

AP here...I never desired the principal role. That is okay. You may stay in your role or elevate into a different role depending on your background and desires. 🙏🏽

I think it comes down to how those above you support you. If you want to be a life long AP, the support and training you will get is different than if you want to become a principal. Besides, it’s only been your first year…people should chill out and respect your decision.

I’m 100% with you on every word-I was a teacher for 22 years, coach for 3 and now last year as an AP-I’ve heard from so many, the same thing, “we see you as a principal” which is for flattering, but giant no thanks to being the head one in charge!

I taught for 20 years & was an assistant principal for 10 years. I never wanted to be a principal because I feel like that job is an anointing, and unless Jesus himself told me that was what I was supposed to do….I never wanted to do it. I retired June 1 and I have no regrets. I feel like I did what I was supposed to do so I would encourage you to pray…being a principal is a huge commitment that could be all consuming. But if the time ever comes to you and it’s what you’re supposed to do you’ll know.🥰

I'm dealing with this now! I feel like everyone i started teaching with is in admin and I'm still in the "classroom" (4th year in library after 15 in elementary). People have told me to go into the admin pool. Some days I think Yeah I want admin and the. other days I'm like no.

I totally understand where you’re coming from! I’m an assistant principal- going into my 5th year as an AP. I have no desire to be a principal! I let it be known anytime anyone mentions “Because you’ll probably have your own school by that point…you’ll be a principal by then…when do you wanna make the move to be a principal…” 🗣️I DON’T! 🤣

I loved being an AP! I think the push for some may stem from wanting to be the decision maker or having the ability to lead versus carrying out someone's vision. if you love it... keep going!
