✨ Hunting The Wren ✨ We see some strange folk customs, especially during the winter months - it is the time for Mari Llwyd, Wassailing, First Footing and many more. Hunting the Wren is one such tradition and is practiced not just in the Isle of Man, but also in Ireland, England, Wales and even some Celtic European countries such as Spain and France. On the 26th of December, St.Stephens day, a wren is hunted down by groups of mummers (or sometimes known as wrenboys) who dress in straw and colourful clothing, where it is then killed and placed on a pole to be paraded about town. On the 26th of December, St.Stephens day, a wren is hunted down by groups of mummers (or sometimes known as wrenboys) who dress in straw and colourful clothing, where it is then killed and placed on a pole to be paraded about town. There are actually quite a few theories and folk legends behind the origin of this tradition: One theory tells of a wren who betrays Irish soldiers by beating its wings on the shields of Viking invaders, and is hunted down for revenge ever since. In Christian mythology god wanted to see who was the "king of all birds" and set a test; whoever could fly the highest would win. The wren won by trickery, and was then named the King of all Birds. Other legends say it originated from a Witch who leads men to the Isle of Man, where they manage to break free of her magic and attempt to capture her. However the clever witch turns herself into a wren to escape. The wren was also viewed as a powerful symbol of midwinter to the Celts, as the wren would continue singing when all other birds stopped in the winter months. Hunting the Wren could well stem from an ancient pagan tradition, and might have even been used as a midwinter sacrifice to appease the gods. As with most folk customs still alive today, we know that they most likely originated from ancient pagan cultures. Such ancient customs were then promptly adopted by the Christian church, which is why we see such a crossover of traditions and customs throughout various cultures and religions. This tradition is still very much alive and practiced today, however a fake wren is now used instead of a real one! . . #huntingthewren #mummers #wrenboys #midwinter #wren #wrenday #celticcustoms #celtictraditions #paganism #pagansacrifice #celts #celticbritain #Ireland #Irish #manx #pagantraditions #midwinterfolklore #folklore #celticfolklore #ireland #wintersolstice #folkcustoms #folklore #witchtok #witches #pagan #pagantok #wintersolstice #Christmas #christmastraditions #christmasfolklore
